Steve Martin is an actor,comedian,musician and has been a very well known entertainer in the American scene for at least thirty five years. He has been on his own TV shows, and starred in several movies.
This is his second recent banjo playing CD, he did another one similar to this a couple of years ago. That CD, won the Grammy for best Bluegrass Album in 09. Last year, Martin established the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in banjo and bluegrass, an annual award to bring recognition to an individual or group for outstanding accomplishment in the field of banjo or bluegrass music. The first award was presented to Noam Pikelny. Martin must have a ton of energy as he also has time write books. He wrote all of the material on this album.
This album conveys a combination of good traditional bluegrass music with the help of the Steep Canyon Rangers, and also Paul McCartney and The Dixie Chicks. It is refreshing to hear the Chicks together again singing a bluegrass song reminding me of their CD "Home", with the Martin written song "You". I like this song the best on the album. Paul McCartney sings the vocals on "Best Love". Bluegrass with a cello and a pop feel to it as McCartney sounds different here, I did not recognize his voice right way , had to look at Literature. Martin adds some of his humor to a few songs here, like on "Atheists Don't Have No Songs", a song that makes light of southern gospel singing,and he with his back up group even do some gospel type harmonies. I really don't care for this track, but he says that he likes to perform it live, a staple of their shows.
He was fortunate in discovering his back up group(Steep Canyon Rangers) that tours and records with him, his wife had known them and introduced them to him. Their banjo player Graham Sharp compliments Martin's clawhammer style with some Scruggs type pickin'. The album overall is done very well as it is recorded by Gary Paczosa and mastered by Doug Sax, two of the best at what they do in the music industry. It is well balanced and the sound is not overly bright, as some bluegrass can be. I must say that today's bluegrass music is a booming business and the recordings for the most part are top notch.
"Northern Island" is an up tempo bluegrass jam, the banjos are in the front of most of the recordings, especially instrumentals. He does a bluegrass rendering of his comic King Tut.

Yes, Mountain Heart even calls themselves alt/bluegrass. This group is releasing a seven song EP on Oct 10, but, a bit different than usual. I do know this, It is a great recording, has four very good original songs , and 3 covers, Little Sadie, The Ride, and a long 7 minute jam of Whipping Post by the Allman Brothers band. Will leave the links for you.
Oh yeh, as far as I know, no mp3s are scheduled to sell anywhere, this CD will be a real treat, I know a Lot of work has gone into it.
This group has done nothing , but work themselves to death all summer, hitting all of The Festivals. They have no record label now, They had been with Rural Rhythmns Records for a couple of years and their live CD at the Ark in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They have no publicist, personally, because of my love for their music, I have been trying to share their exploits this summer. Bluegrass Bands literally live on that Bus most of the time. They have a real good collection of Youtubes on Youtube. They have no deal for Distribution, right now, only for sale at their website, you can preorder and they will try to get it out to you by Oct 12. Name of EP is "That Just Happened", which is a real good selection of songs. Personally, I think they should have worked something out with Rural Rhythms records which is a good label. Their music is all acoustic, only baddie is Shillings "Electric Keyboards".

Other members are lead singer Josh Shilling(piano, guitar), Jake Stargel (Lead guitar) , Aaron Ramsey who plays a wicked mandolin and Jason Moore on Bass. This band is 10 years old, and they go on with a Facebook crowd of 7,000 and their manager Brian Smith. I was priviledged to meet them all and see them this June at Sellersville Theater, where they put on a great show. These guys are country and bluegrass thru and thru, they like hunting , the great outdoors, and a song that gave them a boost this year was An incredible rendition of "The National Anthem" at a Nascar race. They have been getting some endorsement breaks with Vietti brand of Chili, and Mike Long Guitars. Go check out

(Nashville, TN – Jan. 11, 2010) Pioneering Country duo, The Bellamy Brothers, have released “Heart of My Heart” to radio, the second single from their career-spanning greatest hits collection, The Anthology, Volume 1.
Co-written with the iconic but often overlooked songwriter Jerry Lynn Williams before his death in 2005, “Heart of My Heart” follows the release of Anthology’s first Top 40 single and duet with The Bacon Brothers, “Guilty of the Crime.”
“Jerry Williams’ been called the most famous unknown songwriter in music history,” says David Bellamy. “Howard and I only wrote a few songs with Jerry because we met him just a couple of years before he died, but he was one of the best writers we've ever worked with. We are really proud to have written ‘Heart of My Heart’ with him.”
Williams’ songwriting credits include Eric Clapton’s “Running on Faith” and “Pretending,” Bonnie Raitt’s “Real Man,” Delbert McClinton’s “Givin’ It Up For Your Love” and Jimmy and Stevie Ray Vaughan’s “Tick Tock.” He also contributed tracks for legends such as Ringo Starr and B.B. King.
In addition to a handful of new and previously unreleased songs, such as “Heart of My Heart” and “Guilty of the Crime,” Anthology, Volume 1 features 13 No. 1 hits from the Bellamy’s prolific career, including “Let Your Love Flow,” “Old Hippie,” “If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body (Would You Hold It Against Me),” “Kids of the Baby Boom” and “For All the Wrong Reasons,” among others.
Brothers Howard and David are celebrating their 35th anniversary this year and plan to release The Anthology, Volume 2 in the fourth quarter of 2010. The duo is currently touring in the U.S., with their annual European tour taking place later this summer. A Bellamy Brothers biography is also in production and is scheduled for release in 2011.

This album, Dailey & Vincent Sing The Statler Brothers, features exciting and authentic bluegrass interpretations of songs from the Statlers’ repertoire and will be available exclusively at Cracker Barrel Old Country Store® on February 1st.
Dailey & Vincent are uniquely qualified for this project. As the reigning International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Entertainers of the Year, they have previously recorded their versions of some Statler songs and include a few in their live show. In 2008, they performed at the medallion ceremony marking the Statlers’ official induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame®. Dailey & Vincent’s self-titled debut on Rounder Records included their version of the Statlers’ hit “More Than a Name on a Wall,” which topped the Sirius bluegrass chart in 2008. Their Brothers From Different Mothers CD included “Years Ago” and “There is You” from the Statlers’ catalog, along with a special guest appearance by Statler Harold Reid in his alter ego of Lester “Roadhog” Moran on “Head Hung Down,” which spent two months at #1 on the Bluegrass Unlimited song chart.
“The Statler Brothers are my childhood heroes,” says Dailey. “My daddy bought me a Statler Brothers record in 1983, and I went to bed every night listening to that record. I knew every word to every song. We’re delighted to work with Cracker Barrel on this project because we pull our bus into a Cracker Barrel every weekend; that’s where we have breakfast and lunch.”
“The Statlers have given so much to America through their music,” adds Vincent. “Some of those lyrics are just so powerful, like “The Class of ’57.” It’s all about America. It’s an honor to record these classic songs and share them with Cracker Barrel’s guests.”

Oak Ridge Boys to be on Early Show and Fox News Channel
The Oak Ridge Boys are set to perform on CBS’ The Early Show and Fox News Channel’s Huckabee this Saturday, October 17th. On each show, The Oaks’ will be performing a Jamey Johnson-penned, soon-to-be-classic called ‘Mama’s Table’, their 2nd single released on The Boys Are Back (Spring Hill Music, May 2009). Following will be a brief interview and a performance of; you guessed it, the eternally hip hit that everybody knows, ‘Elvira.’ The Oak Ridge Boys appearance on CBS’ The Early Show is slated to air on Saturday morning, October 17th. Their appearance on Fox News Channel’s Huckabee will air multiple times October 17th and 18th. Governor Huckabee will join The Oak Ridge Boys on bass. Check your local listings.

The Bellamys performed "If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body (Would You Hold It Against Me)," then invited the Bacons on stage for their current single and collaboration, "Guilty of the Crime." The two pairs of brothers closed out the set with a rocking version of "Let Your Love Flow." The appearance marked the first public appearance for the Bacons and the Bellamys together.

"@ The Gorge" - The Dead 5 - 16-09 - A review
I must say, the quality of sirius radio is awesome, even with my small headphones, 128 bp mp3 quality, on computer, or you can get 32 if you have dial up. Let me get this out the way first, Haynes is driving me crazy with that hot envelope filter or wah he is using, He overdoes it, Chimenti on the other hand sounds like Keith Godchaux on piano. Lesh is dropping bombs like usual, He sounds great. I can't hear Weirs guitar on this song, Wait, he is playing a wah too, this is nuts, This is 2 hours into the show, I have listened to about half of it. This song is Althea, Haynes sings it nicely. Now, get that Wah out of here. Uh oh, is this, could it be, 1, 2, Yeh, "Eyes Of The world", Phil sounds perfect, Weir is nailing the guitar with a more jazzy feel, Is that Phil singing, yeh, Go, Love this, The wah is gone, nice, nice Harmonies, Whew , Go guys, Haynes is teasing with his guitar now, great interplay, Jerry would be proud. Boy, Chimenti is really tinkling those keys. Crowd is alive. Haynes does a little tinkling with the strings, real mellow.
This version of the Dead is not up to 70s standards, especially vocally, Once in a while, they get the vocals, but I just do not see Haynes fitting. Jimmy Herring, The guys from "The Other Ones". Dickey Betts, He can do a good Franklins Tower. What about, 4 real Dead members plus Chimenti. Face it, Haynes always wanted to get a few wahs and envelope filters, but Jerry was subtle with those Babies. Warren is a very good guitarist, but more of a fit with The Allman Brothers or Government Mule(his Band).

This version of the Dead is not up to 70s standards, especially vocally, Once in a while, they get the vocals, but I just do not see Haynes fitting. Jimmy Herring, The guys from "The Other Ones". Dickey Betts, He can do a good Franklins Tower. What about, 4 real Dead members plus Chimenti. Face it, Haynes always wanted to get a few wahs and envelope filters, but Jerry was subtle with those Babies. Warren is a very good guitarist, but more of a fit with The Allman Brothers or Government Mule(his Band).

"Ashes Won't Burn" - Jeff Cook and his Goodtimes Allstar Band
Ex- Alabama lead guitarist Jeff Cook has not stopped playing since Alabama officially broke up in 04. His Allstar Goodtime band is a group is a nine piece group including himself that he handpicked to target fairs, festivals, casinos and very diverse types of music that Cook calls Funtry' music. It is a very veteran bunch of musicians. Their album "Ashes Won't Burn" is a mix of cover songs like "Knockin' On Heaven's Door", "Mist Of Desire", "Brick House"(Commodores), Free's "All Right Now" , an excellent version of the Beatles' "I Feel Fine". Honestly, I was surprised as I listened to the CD a few times, really was not what I was expecting. It is definitely a funky ,rockin' album. This group probably puts on a great live show.
Along with Cook, Larry Hanson, also from Alabama, plays guitar, sax, keyboards and trumpet. Lead guitarist Link Detten Has been a pro entertainer for over twenty years. He has played by himself to having been in many other bands. RK Brown , began his career young at 16 hitting the road, playing bass also, played with Curtis Mayfield, Clint Black, Charlie Pride and many others.
The record is on Quest Records. It is available for download on itunes and on Cook's website. The only other project I reviewed of Cook's was a Cracker Barrel Restaurant release of "Unreleased Songs From Alabama's Farewell tour". I basically missed Alabama's careeer, not listening to music, but Church music in the Eighties when they were super hot, remember a gal that I worked with, loved Alabama, and I loved country music, but wasn't familiar with much, but their big hits. I really enjoyed The Cracker Barrel release, The band sounded great, it was a very good recording. I remember listing the musicians wrong and I got an e-mail from a Jeff Cook, He said, you are not very familiar with Alabama , are you? I confessed that I was not, and he told me that I had a couple of the musicians playing wrong instruments. I e-mailed the guy back, not knowing who it was, until I went to fix the problem and saw Jeff Cook, I had to laugh at myself. Basically, this is a bunch of super talented musicians that click well. It sounds like they enjoy what they are doing. So, you Alabama fans, go on and pick up a copy.

THE OAK RIDGE BOYS SET TO PERFORM ON SXSW LIVE MARCH 20TH AT 7PM CT/8PM ET ON DIRECTV’S THE 101® NETWORK
Nashville, TN – The Oak Ridge boys are making a special appearance this week at Austin, Texas’ trendsetting South by Southwest (SXSW) Music Festival. They will perform on SXSW Live, a live television broadcast airing exclusively on DIRECTV’s original entertainment channel, The 101® Network. Broadcasting live in HD and 5.1 surround sound, their performance will air Friday March 20th at 7pm CST / 8pm ET.
“For the third year in a row, DIRECTV customers will be able to experience SXSW Live with a front-row seat and an exclusive look into one of the premier music festivals in the world,” said Eric Shanks, executive vice president of Entertainment for DIRECTV.
The broadcast will originate from updated state-of-the-art venue – the Lonestar Lounge - constructed from the ground up in the Austin Convention Center to host the exclusive SXSW Live performances on DIRECTV.
