"Crimson, White and Indigo" -July 7,1989 - Grateful Dead In Concert

This DVD took me by surprise, got to listen to it last night without any distractions, It seems like 89 was the year of Concert Videos and possibly the hottest year of the Dead, Being a Seventies Dead Fan, I have listened and watched all of the Others like "Down Hill From Here" and "Truckin' Up to Buffalo", the companion to this one, recorded three days earlier, Which was good, but nothing to jump up and down about. As soon as I put on my headphones and put in the DVD, I was captivated by the quality of sound, the excellent camera work, You spend the show on the stage with The Grateful Dead, You see some very neat and candid things that you normally would not see. I was totally transported by the DVD to like being there, it is just incredible, best camera work I have ever seen on a concert film. I had my Oppodigital DVD player set on 5.1 instead of stereo for the Phones and I must say , the sound was out of this world. As usual, it would take the Dead a few songs to get everything tweaked just right. The first set was a bit unusual, putting "Iko Iko" as their second song. "Little Red Rooster was third song". They were destined to rock out that night. Their vocals were stellar that night. Brent Mydland turning i some great performance, especially on "Blow Away", where he started this like talk part of the song that put the huge crowd in his hands, The rest of the band kinda backed off and let Brent shine. It was quite an emotional moment where Brent had the crowd in his hands. It was the set ender and after Brent was done, you could see Jerry smile at Brent with a big proud papa type smile, they always had a good musical relationship, feeding off of each other.

The DVD goes right into the second set, in the fully packed JFK Stadium, which held close to 100,000 and it looked packed. "Box Of Rain" started out the next set and Phil plain nailed it and there was some great vocal harmony at the end, Weir, Garcia and Lesh. A great version of "Scarlett Begonias" was next, by this time the band was firing on all cylinders. The drummers were hot, Bobby was doing his Bobby thing , backing away from the mike and then sort of attacking it again. Phil's bass is playing in his very all over the place, but right where he was supposed to be mode. There were smiles all around, it just was so cool, being up so close to the action, you could hear lots of little comments, it showed a shot of the Drummers from the back once where they were watching Jerry and talking to each other. In the seventies , The Dead used to take a long time between songs, Their show in the late 80s was tight, I did not notice words being forgotten, and as usual, Jerry was phenomenal in his playing, you would hear a lull, and then Jerry would rip out a solo that was so tight and hot, and Brent was so hot in his responses to Jerry's playing.

There was a very good selection of material from all over there career, From "Turn On Your Lovelight" to newer material like "Standing On The Moon". This is a roller coaster ride of ups and downs, but this is the Dead at the peak of their game. A Great show for older Dead Heads and newbies too, wished I had seen one of the rare screenings, There was one very close to my house, the week before the package was released. Rhino got this one right, wish that the DVD could have been sold separately, because I am not going to be listening to the CDs, I'm going to listen to The DVD thru my Oppodigital universal Disc player, great sound. A plug for it too.

A Mark Chesnutt-Brand Of All-American Music History

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (April 27, 2010)—Saguaro Road Records is pleased to un-cinch Mark Chesnutt’s new collection of all-American, all-time favorite, whiskey-soaked standards—OUTLAW.* From the distinguished specialty label that has brought country music enthusiasts unrivaled recordings from artists such as Patty Loveless, Tanya Tucker and Lonestar, OUTLAW follows in the same vein; with grit, spit-polished and shined, and delivered by one of country music’s finest music stylists.

Set to be released on June 22, 2010, OUTLAW features re-recordings of some of Chesnutt’s personal heroes and life-long friends such as Billy Joe Shaver, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings (for whom Mark’s eldest son is named.) The product of producer Pete Anderson (Dwight Yoakam/Michelle Shocked/Tanya Tucker), OUTLAW is a true-denim-blue Mark Chesnutt-branded musical composition.

“When I was first approached to record this CD, my reaction wasn’t just ‘yes,’ but ‘hell, yeah,’” Chesnutt said. “I cut my teeth on this kind of music and it’s an opportunity [that might not have otherwise presented itself] for me to pay tribute to some of my biggest heroes in country music.”

OUTLAW quivers with the neo-traditional country style Chesnutt has been known for over his 20-year career. With traces of black flowers, Bloody Marys, easy lovin’, country livin’, sober Sundays, freedoms, desperados and bad behavior, the new, timeless project is Mark Chesnutt at his best. With an invigorating feel reminiscent of the music that brought him to the forefront as a country music traditionalist, and in keeping with the musical trends that make him a mainstay in the format today, OUTLAW, delivered in quintessential Chesnutt style, warrants attention.

“Mark Chesnutt put on a vocal display like I’ve never before seen in the studio. He stood in front of the mic and sang the whole record, from beginning to end, flawlessly [and in less than three hours]. We are all amazed at the results,” introduced producer Pete Anderson. “There may be singers out there as good as Mark, but there are none better and, at this point in my career, I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to work with this caliber of talent.”

Carrying the torch in the footsteps of George Jones and Waylon Jennings, Chesnutt plays nearly 100 dates a year. He has four platinum albums, five gold albums, 14 No. 1 singles and 23 Top 10 singles to his name; his trademarked voice has shaped the music of today’s country music newcomers and the new country music generation. OUTLAW is Chesnutt’s fourteenth studio recording and the first project of work from L.A.

Up-to-date information surrounding the list of OUTLAW cuts will be released via Mark’s social community sites:
http://www.facebook.com/markchesnutt; http://www.twitter.com/MarkChesnutt; http://www.myspace.com/officialmarkchesnutt. The CD will be available via all major retail and digital outlets.

Wade Hayes To release A New CD

On April 21, Wade Hayes will officially release Place To Turn Around, a well-crafted collection of eleven songs, nine penned by Hayes, that is guaranteed to make the wait worthwhile. The new album includes some outstanding musical arrangements with edgy undertones and, luckily for the listener, it is not without the tender touch that helped send Hayes to the top of the charts on previous projects.

Hayes, an accomplished singer, songwriter, and musician, has spent the last ten years preparing for the release of this album and he is extremely proud of the end result. It will come as no surprise to his longtime fans that, he says, staying true to his country roots was not something he had to work hard to do. After the first listen, the nights spent in honky tonks, and the countless hours on the road, are evident in the composition and delivery of each song. Like every great songwriter, song content was drawn from personal life experiences
and incorporated with what was witnessed while touring across the country, so the album is filled with an immeasurable variety of life lessons.

Fans will find it difficult to choose one stand out track on the album but Hayes says "What's A Broken Heart For You," which he wrote with Michael White, is at the top of his favorite list. "I really love this song. I was talking to my mom; she's a very religious person, she was talking to me about a way she prayed. Her words knocked around in my brain for almost a year and a half before I finally wrote the song and I'm really proud of the way it turned out."

Hayes is certainly no stranger to country radio or country music charts. When your debut single goes to number one and the Country Music Association names you "Top New Male Vocalist," well, your destiny is predetermined. It doesn't hurt that he has managed to rack up an impressive amount of solid hits in the years since. Most recently, when he isn't busy promoting the new album, Hayes has
been touring as the lead guitarist with Randy Owens, former lead singer for Alabama.

After a brief hiatus, Wade Hayes is back and better than ever! He says "It's really good to be back out playing on my own again. I am really excited about this project, and I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for me."

Place to Turn Around, which had a limited release last year, is now available via WadeHayes.com, iTunes and at Wade's live shows.

"Hell Still Ain't Frozen Over" - Susan Hickman - Single Review

This country ballad from Susan Hickman's self titled CD has a haunting Quality to it. The pedal steel and sweet textured rhythm guitar accompany her very emotive vocals. This is an excellent composition and production by Doug Deforest.

This gal has a very strong voice and sings with confidence. I do not find the term "Hell Still Ain't Frozen Over" used in a trite way. It is part of the emotion of the song which is carefully constructed with a great melodic melody full of strong hooks. This gal knows how to get inside of a song. This song deserves a lot of airplay.

Bo Bice Returns With NEW ALBUM, 3

BO BICE RETURNS WITH NEW ALBUM, 3

Southern Rocker Explores Roots, Country and Gospel On His Third Solo Album

Due May 18th on Saguaro Road Records

Nashville, TN – American Idol alum Bo Bice will release his third album, aptly titled 3, on May 18th (Saguaro Road Records in association with Bo’s own Sugar Money Records). Soulful southern blues and rock, gospel-like choruses, Americana and a touch of country, the new album is much like Bice himself; irresistibly likeable, filled with easygoing charm and undeniable talent.

“I feel the new CD, 3, is my strongest to date,” says Bo, “filled with a plethora of sounds that show people who the real Bo Bice is.” “There's something for everyone; country, soul, rock & roll...it's like your favorite pair of jeans; it just feels right.” “Bo Bice is an enormously talented singer, songwriter and musician that has forged incredible relationships with the fans,” adds Mike Jason, Senior VP of Audio and Video Retail at Saguaro Road Records, home to Patty Loveless, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Tanya Tucker and Lonestar. “We are absolutely thrilled to be partnering with him for the release of 3."

On 3, Bo wrote half of the songs himself and collaborated with other writers on the remainder, playing both acoustic and electric guitar during the recording sessions in his adopted hometown of Nashville. He was joined by Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman and keyboardist AJ Croce, whose father Jim has long been one of Bo’s greatest songwriting influences. Bo also produced five of the album’s songs, with an additional six co-produced with D. Scott Miller.

Bice’s Southern sensibility, earthy vocals and decidedly non-pop performances won over a nation of fans during the fourth season of American Idol, where he landed as the runner-up to Carrie Underwood. His first single, “Inside Your Heaven,” reached #1 on the pop chart when it was released in 2005 and was certified gold after it became the second-highest debuting song of the year. His album (The Real Thing) debuted at #4 shortly afterward and was also certified gold, his 2007 follow-up (See The Light) was ranked #1 by VH-1, and he later sung lead on Santana’s single “Brown Skinned Girl” (certified gold). 3 is Bice’s third album and first for Saguaro Road Records.

About Saguaro Road Records and Direct Holdings:
Saguaro Road is an imprint launched by Direct Holdings Americas Inc, the company that markets and sells audio and video entertainment products under the Time Life brand, using it under license from Time Warner Inc. The label focuses on artists that have a uniquely American roots oriented sound.

Tiffany Johnson Announces Portion of CD Release To Benefit Soles4Souls, The Shoe Charity

Recording Artist Tiffany Johnson Announces Portion of CD Release Scuffed and Simple to Benefit Soles4Souls®, the Shoe Charity

The South Carolina Native draws song inspiration from her simple beginnings

Nashville TN – April 7, 2010--With the release of Tiffany Johnson’s debut CD Scuffed and Simple, the artist with deep southern roots has come a long way since her musical debut at the tender age of six. Recalling her first time singing in public, Johnson fondly describes sitting on an upright piano with her braided pigtails, wearing her ‘Dorothy Shoes’—Buster Brown Mary Janes her mother had rolled in glue and red glitter. She sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” and that became the moment she fell in love with music and performing.

She brought childhood memories like those into the creative process for the song selection on Scuffed and Simple, even co-writing with producer Lionel Cartwright on ‘My Dorothy Shoes’—an inspirational and poignant ballad about her small-town start and the impact it had on her life’s direction. Johnson chose a line from the second verse of the song as her album title. “That title reminds me a lot of myself,” said Johnson. “I’m pretty simple and I’ve had some bumps and bruises but, just like the shoes, there’s a lot of potential there.”

And shoes has continued to be a theme for Johnson’s life as a full-time spokesperson for Soles4Souls, the international shoe charity dedicated to providing shoes to people in need. Once Johnson learned about the organization’s mission, she took it on wholeheartedly and has since traveled in and out of the country, singing, speaking, and lacing up shoes as a representative of Soles4Souls.

“There’s something about fitting somebody with a pair of shoes,” she explained. “You get down on the ground and you physically touch someone, and it‘s not so much about the shoes but about spending that moment with them and helping them know that they matter, right then and there.”

The cause is so close to her heart that a portion of the proceeds from each copy sold of Scuffed and Simple will go to the organization she says has taught her what God’s work is all about.

“Through Soles4Souls, I am continually learning that it is so not about me; there’s this big world full of hurting people. We just have no idea what people are going through, internationally, and even next door, until we reach out and address their needs,” she said.

Soles4Souls is proud to have the support of Johnson and her unique music. "Tiffany's inspiration in music and towards the OUTREACH of Soles4Souls further communicates our commitment to change the world one pair at a time," said Elsey. "Our goal is to offer HOPE with the gift of shoes and now with Tiffany's ‘My Dorothy Shoes’ hit, we can impact with music," he added.

Scuffed and Simple can be purchased on her website http://www.tiffanyjohnsonlive.com and digitally through iTunes, LaLa, Rhapsody, Napster, and AmazonMP3.com.

Legendary Songwriter Recovering At Nashville Hospital
Nashville, TN (April 7, 2010) -- NSAI Hall of Famer Hank Cochran has often said that "God smiles" upon him, and it was obviously true last Wednesday, March 31, when Cochran's doctors discovered an aortic aneurysm the size of a grapefruit. Thanks to the quick intervention of Doctors Karl Vandevender, Johanna Bendell and Chad Swan (Surgeon), Hank was rushed into surgery and the aneurysm was repaired before it burst - an outcome that would have proved fatal for the 74-year old legend of song.
Cochran is in good spirits, although a bit "tired," according to his wife Suzi. She asks friends to understand that Hank is only able to see very limited visitors at this time, however emails are welcome. They may be sent to: susienashville@aol.com .

"The Famous Lefty Flynn's" - The Grascals - A Review

This is the fourth album of this much celebrated Bluegrass group, as they grow into their ever evolving sound. Not traditional in sound, but traditional in spirit with a modern sound to the Sweet recording in the twelve great songs featured here.

Whether they are cooking on a fast song or harmonizing on a slow ballad, The Grascals have a sound that is theirs. New to this CD is the award winning young Kristin Scott Benson, who adds her highly Skilled Banjo playing to the mix. This gal has two CDs of her own, before joining up with The Grascals, great fit.

I reviewed their last disc "Keep Walking On" and I find a much more empowered group here. Everything fits together well in a great mix. They start out doing a fast driving bluegrass version of "Last Train To Clarksville", originally recorded by the Monkees.
A song written by Jamie Johnson of the group "My Baby's waiting On The Other Side" really takes off, nice lyrics and some great banjo and mandolin.

A song by Steve Earle "My Old Friend, The Blues" has an old time country side to it with some pedal steel by Lloyd Green. A very good version with lots of emotion.

Another midtempo song "Up This Hill and Down" has some great hooks, just love Kristin's banjo interplay with the mandolin. They play together like they have been playing for years together.

Similar to this is "I'm Blue, I'm Lonesome" (Monroe, Williams) A classic old time country song done with a bluegrass twist.

The Twelveth song is a beautiful (public domain) gospel song. "Give Me Jesus" The instruments are more in the background on this track, while the sweet vocals take the front of the mix. Both country music and Bluegrass fans should love this great effort.

Oklahoma History Center to Honor Music Industry Legend

Oklahoma History Center to Honor Music Industry Legend

Nashville, TN – Oklahoma’s own Jim Halsey, legendary music manager/agent, impresario, teacher and now author, will be featured at an exhibit opening and reception in his honor at the Oklahoma History Center, on Wednesday, April 7.

The 1800-square-foot “Starmaker: Jim Halsey and the Legends of Country Music” exhibit will begin with a public signing event for Halsey’s book, “Starmaker,” from 3-5 p.m. on April 7. Halsey has been the agent for more than 40 top music stars over the past 60 years and built the largest country music agency in the world. In Halsey’s honored career, he has guided – and in many cases discovered– stellar names like Roy Clark, The Oak Ridge Boys, Merle Haggard, the Judds and many more.

On display will be many items and memorabilia highlighting key events in Halsey's momentous career, from gold and platinum albums marking his clients’ (Hank Thompson, Roy Clark, The Oak Ridge Boys, Reba McEntire, The Judds, Mel Tillis, Merle Haggard, Clint Black, Tammy Wynette, Freddy Fender, Don Williams) incredible achievements to awards and citations presented to Halsey for his stellar contributions to the music industry. Also shown will be posters from events worldwide where Halsey worked his promotional magic, pictures from first of their kind Las Vegas events and items from the landmark 1976 Soviet Tour, where Halsey clients Roy Clark and The Oak Ridge Boys tore a wide hole in the Iron Curtain with just their warm enthusiasm and immense musical talents. From the Halsey Archives there will be never-before-seen contracts to the stars, and guitars signed by such luminaries as Roy Clark, Wanda Jackson, The Oak Ridge Boys and even rock and roll giants such as Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones and The Doobie Brothers.

Historic Halsey Company posters, artist rosters, contracts and artist development plans will reveal the depth to which Mr. Halsey was dedicated to his clients and the music industry, which could never be the same without him.

When Halsey sold his company to The William Morris Agency, he founded the Jim Halsey Institute, which focuses on helping others pursue their dreams in the music industry. In his new book “Starmaker,” released by Tate Publishing nationwide this month, Halsey continues that mission by sharing the secrets he learned while shepherding the careers of entertainment giants.

Sponsored by the George Kaiser Family Foundation, The Tulsa Chamber of Commerce, Mustang Fuel Corporation, Tate Publishing, BluBlocker Corporation, and The Oklahoma History Center.

Published by Tate Publishing and Enterprises, “Starmaker” digs deep into the fundamentals: how to develop an act, how to get an agent, how to use the press to build your audience, how to play the biggest and best forums. His incisive advice will help readers find their place on the team—the position that provides the most successful and most fulfilling career. The book is available through bookstores nationwide, from the publisher at www.tatepublishing.com/bookstore, or by visiting barnesandnoble.com or amazon.com.

Since 1990, The Jim Halsey Institute has been helping artists’ dreams come true every day. Halsey continues his active management of the supergroup, The Oak Ridge Boys. When he is not traveling, teaching, or writing, he lives near Tulsa, Oklahoma, with his wife, Minisa.
